Independent General Counsel
Traditionally, many smaller and early stage companies have met their need for legal services by retaining an outside law firm. Many rightly believe that their budget and workload will not justify the expense of an experienced, full-time General Counsel to handle day to day issues, and to provide proactive advice about ongoing matters.
A growing number of companies are taking a new approach. Instead of getting their legal help from a law firm or hiring a full time staff lawyer, they are hiring an independent, or part time, general counsel. Independent General Counsels are experienced senior lawyers who work on an as-needed basis to handle the company's legal needs.
